Book Review : Educated by Tara Westover

Bismillah.
Assalamualaikum.

Hi.

Around the month of September 2019, I bought a book from Popular book shop Wangsa Maju. Tara Westover's memoir, Educated.

Finished reading around October the same year and I believe that I made a promise to share my view on the book and somehow it was left forgotten. So here goes my review that has been long overdue. Enjoy.

Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis :

Born to survivalists in the mountain of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then she would wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a home.

Sebenarnya dah lama teringin nak baca buku ni. I'm not quite sure since when, but the tipping point was when I watched Bill Gates's documentary di Netflix and I saw this book happened to be one of his book inside his monthly book pile and I've decided to get my hands on the book there and then.

To be very honest, I just simply read the book and I have no expectations whatsoever. Masa mula-mula baca tu, I'm enjoying it. It was an easy reading. Bahasa yang digunakan mudah, tak berbunga-bunga, sangat senang untuk dibaca dan difahami.

As I go deep into the book, there are so many things that make me thinking. There so many things I highlighted and this is the note that I made after 181 pages;

The importance of to not solely blindly following, accepting others words as our own
- it is important to learn, to ponder and to make up our mind based on our basic understanding of things.
- parents nurture a child's fundamental thinking method i.e are you encouraging them to be critical and to question things or not.

Atau dalam pernyataan mudah - pendidikan awal adalah penting sebagai asas pemikiran seseorang.

Tambahan lagi, sekarang ini movements on child's early education is expanding. People are learning based on their childhood experience and well, they are learning in molding the children into better. Alhamdulillah. It's a good thing kan? Lagi-lagi kita ni dah menginjak ke dekad baru, hence changes are inevitable.

Heavy, kan?
That's exactly how I feel. It was mind blowing.

"Heart-wrenching... a beautiful testament to the power of education to open eyes and change lives".
- AMY CHUA, The New York Times Book Review.

Similar to how I feel after finish reading this book.

All in all, it's a good read. It makes you ponder about a thing or two. It's based on a true life so you can say you relate on this in some way.

Berjalanlah... di atas muka bumi Allah.
Lihatlah... keindahan ciptaan Allah.
Renunglah... akan hikmahnya.

Is it worth to read?
Personally, I am proposing for everybody to read as an eye opener on the importance of education in and out of classroom. Tak heavy because she's simply telling her stories (Walaupun ada certain parts orang question on the reliability and all, but yeah, kita pun bukannya ingat semua benda yang terjadi dalam hidup kita kan? Kita ingat macam ini, orang ingat macam itu. Perspektif yang berbeza).

So, yeah.
Okay, sehingga review seterusnya.
Love,
Shafa.

First post for 2020

Bismillah.
Assalamu'alaikum.

After contemplating for a while whether nak kembali ke blogspot atau tidak, FINALLY it's been decided that I am coming back to blogspot. Yay! 🤩

History dengan blogspot ni memang dah lama. Since zaman belajar lagi. Then, a few years back bertukar ke Wordpress. Wordpress has been nothing but nice yet I feel like my heart belongs here. Maka, here I am.

Anyway~ Alhamdulillah for 2020. It's a new decade! Finally kita bertemu juga. And this year I've reached 34😍. Alhamdulillah. Tabarakallah.

Dan tak terlewat kan nak wish "Selamat Tahun Baru" 😉.

Until then.
Love,
Shafa.
